I remember a time when Annie and I would easily wish away the days and weeks in excited anticipation of an upcoming event. It might have been a holiday, a birthday, an evening out with friends or the next season or episode of Lost(!)… Whatever the event, the days and weeks in between could be nothing more than vehicles to get you there; empty squares in a diary that stood in between now and the squares filled with capital letters and exclamation marks!
Well, it’s been a while. And it’s been a good while. Health-wise, the last four days have been relatively good for Annie. And consequently it’s made for four full and busy days as we use the window of good health to catch up.
It’s early Sunday morning and the smell of fresh coffee fuels the air as the blessing of a new day slowly unfolds. Annie and I have been sleeping in the downstairs spare room while we enjoy having guests, uncle and aunt Pierre and Mary Jane – who have flown over from France to be with us.
One sunny afternoon in May 2001 I remember calling up Annie (then my fiancee) on my lunch break to tell her about the odd conversation that I had with the solicitor who was then taking care of all the legal proceedings that were required before owning a house and getting married. It was all very new to us. We had no experience with solicitors emphasised by the fact that we knew none of the endless jokes about the profession. The bit of that conversation that I found odd was talking about a will.

I loved the days of my youth but in that dream it’s such a depressing and distressing realisation. When I wake up there is not only a great sense of relief but also a great sense of joy that all that stuff is indeed finished and never again to be revisited. Continue reading
Just how healthy does a person need to be to enjoy Kentucky Fried Chicken? I guess the general consensus is ‘not very’. But for this weekend only, I would contend with the five-a-day munching masses. Continue reading
Here is a little clip from our choir practice yesterday evening. This is literally 30 minutes into the practice. I was putting the video togehter on iMovie on our Mac and came across an audio effect that made it sounds like we were singing the song in a larger room rather than the little room at the chapel we were singing in.
I promise, this is our choir singing! What a majestic sound!
As I wrote last night’s blog entry, Annie was sound asleep on the couch behind me, hooked up to the drip. I was not sure how long the sleep would last, but determined not to disturb her. I was really surprised that she went to bed without being sick. Continue reading
When I was at university I remember something one of my business psychology professors said with regards to prioritising our needs:
“Nobody worries about sharks when they’re drowning in the ocean.”
